How to choose the right Korean exfoliator

Choosing the right exfoliator for your skin

A good exfoliator should help the skin feel smoother, fresher and more refined without leaving it irritated or uncomfortable. Korean exfoliators are often designed to be effective but gentle, making them a good choice for regular skincare routines when used correctly.

In this category, you can find exfoliating toners, peeling gels, toner pads, enzyme formulas and gentle AHA, BHA or PHA products for different skin types and concerns.

  • Oily or acne-prone skin: BHA exfoliators can help with excess oil, clogged pores, blackheads and congestion.
  • Dry or dehydrated skin: Choose gentle PHA or mild enzyme exfoliators, and always follow with hydrating skincare.
  • Sensitive or redness-prone skin: Start with very gentle exfoliation and avoid strong acids or daily use. Patch-test first.
  • Visible pores or rough texture: AHA, BHA, PHA or toner pads can help the skin look smoother and more even with consistent use.
  • Dull or uneven-looking skin: Gentle AHA, PHA or enzyme exfoliators can help remove dead skin buildup and support a brighter-looking complexion.

How to use Korean exfoliators

Exfoliation should be used carefully. More is not always better. For most skin types, starting slowly is the safest and most effective approach.

  1. Start slowly: Begin 1–2 times per week, preferably at night, and increase only if your skin feels comfortable.
  2. Apply after cleansing: Use your exfoliator on clean skin unless the product instructions say otherwise.
  3. Do not mix too many actives: Avoid using strong exfoliating acids on the same night as retinol, retinal, strong vitamin C or other irritating treatments.
  4. Hydrate after exfoliating: Follow with a calming toner or essence, serum and moisturiser to support the skin barrier.
  5. Use SPF every morning: Exfoliating products can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is essential during the day.

Types of exfoliators

Different exfoliators work in different ways, so the best option depends on your skin type and what you want to improve.

  • AHA: Often used for dullness, rough texture and uneven-looking skin tone.
  • BHA: Often preferred for oily skin, clogged pores, blackheads and blemish-prone skin.
  • PHA: A gentler option that can suit dry or sensitive skin better than stronger acids.
  • Enzyme exfoliators: A mild option for softening the look of rough skin without harsh scrubbing.
  • Toner pads: Convenient for quick, controlled exfoliation, especially on areas with texture or congestion.

How to avoid irritation

If your skin starts to sting, peel or feel very dry, you may be using the exfoliator too often or combining it with too many active products. In that case, reduce use and keep the rest of your routine simple for a few days.

A good exfoliating routine should include gentle cleansing, hydration and sunscreen in the morning. This helps the skin look smoother and clearer without feeling stressed.

Frequently asked questions

Which Korean exfoliator should I choose?

If your skin is oily or congested, BHA may be a good option. If your skin is dry, dull or sensitive, a gentle PHA, enzyme exfoliator or mild toner pad may be more suitable.

How often should I exfoliate?

Start 1–2 times per week. If your skin feels comfortable, you can slowly increase depending on the product and your skin tolerance.

Can I use exfoliators every day?

Most skin types do not need daily exfoliation. Using exfoliators too often can cause dryness, sensitivity or irritation.

Can I use exfoliators with retinol or retinal?

It is better not to use exfoliating acids and retinol or retinal on the same night, especially if your skin is sensitive. Alternating nights is usually safer.

Do I need sunscreen when using exfoliators?

Yes. Sunscreen is very important every morning, especially when using exfoliating products, because the skin can become more sensitive to the sun.

Are your Korean exfoliators genuine?

Yes. At Just Cosmetics, we choose genuine Korean skincare products registered on the EU CPNP platform. Products are supplied sealed, properly labelled and stored with care until they are dispatched.
